ETHIOPIA: 500,000 trees to combat climate change in Dirre Inchini

People in Ethiopia are also struggling with water shortages. Around 9,000 people in Dirre Inchini are dependent on unclean water sources. During the dry season, 30 percent of these sources have no water at all. This is because the groundwater level drops. One reason for this is that tree cover has been reduced from 100 to 25 percent in the hilly region, partly due to overgrazing.

A key measure in Dirre Inchini is therefore to plant around 500,000 trees in fenced-in protected areas by the end of the project in 2025. 400,000 had been planted by September 2024.

The aim is to restore natural habitats through a combination of reforestation and soil and water conservation measures. Two of the three planned spring catchments and water supply systems were completed in 2024.

And in order to promote more environmentally friendly livelihoods such as beekeeping, fruit and bamboo cultivation, 54 cooperatives were founded, in which around 1,400 people are organized and receive appropriate training.
